Vancouver's broken social scene? [05 Jul 2008|07:25pm]

vancouver

[neverletmedown]
Calling all Vancouver peoples...

This is not my own question (I live here), but a question I'm copying/pasting from another user from another message board I use, as I'm curious what your answers would be. The [info]vancouver community is highly opinionated, so I figure this would be excellent food for thought! What do you think?

I'm in my early 20's and I plan on moving to the Seattle area. I have a degree in Communication and while the main reason I'm moving to Seattle is b/c of the higher pay (and free housing since I have relatives there I can stay with while going for my Masters and working to save money for when I decide where I really want to live afterwards), I also wanted to live near the city b/c I was hoping for an excellent social life and night life that I can't get in Appalachia.

While I haven't moved to Seattle yet, I did learn that basically the people in Seattle are not nearly as social as I hoped. While they will act nice, supposedly they prefer to be in their own cliques or it takes you forever to get them to hang out with you. I was wondering how the social scene was in Vancouver.

I know in Toronto I was able to go up to people and make some friends. Montreal was insanely social and people were practically your friends from the get-go (at least that's how it was with me). Northeast England was pretty friendly too, but I know there are places like NYC where the people seemed pretty rude to me. I was wondering if I could build connections and have a better chance at socializing with people in Vancouver or are they more like people in Seattle and NYC? I won't be going up there every weekend, just once in a while to hang out and/or to escape the anti-socialness of Seattle if it really is as anti-social as they warn me.

Also, do they have a good clubbing scene? Especially clubs that play rock/dance/techno music instead of just hip-hop or gothic? Is it moderately safe to walk around Vancouver (or around the same safeness as Toronto or Montreal) or is it more like some of the other U.S. cities where just being a female after midnight is a huge risk?

New Tune: The Perfect Storm of Wrong [05 Jul 2008|09:16pm]

The Perfect Storm of Wrong

I was thinking about what makes things right. My temporary conclusion is that everything is a collection of mistakes chained and re-arranged forever; like contrails at sunset and the hum after saying, "common."

Monster Hunting in Los Angeles [05 Jul 2008|06:02pm]

cryptozoology

[boju]

10. Bigfoot

You make think Bigfoots are only a Northwoods beast, but Los Angeles has 3 distinct breeds of city ape. The first is your standard bigfoot, 6-11 ft tall shaggy gigantopithecus. The first sighting came in 1973 when a full sized Macho Sasquatcho chased down a pick up truck out in San Fernando Valley. The beast got close enough to the vehicle that they could smell its breath, which they later told reporters was "stinky." In 1974 a bigfoot was actually seen in the city, between 45th st and 47th st on Quartz Hill.

Best places to go bigfoot hunting: Big Rock Canyon in San Fernando Valley, Quartz Hill in the San Gabriel Mountains, Azusa at the San Gabriel Mountain Foothills, Campgrounds in Santa Clarita, Elizabeth Lake, Lancaster.

9. Skunk Ape

Bigfoots little brother is most commonly sighted in Florida, but he's also been seen in Palos Verdes and Redondo Beach, moving in and out of the suburbs via the sewers and knocking over trash cans for food. Skunk ape stands about 4 to 5 feet tall and reeks.

Best Place to go Skunk Ape hunting: Palos Verdes near the Dominator shipwreck. Redondo beach fields and suburbs at night.

8. The Beast of Billiwhack

The third kind of LA bigfoot might not be an ape at all. Seen once in Santa Paula and once in nearby Ojai, the Billiwhack beast has an shaggy, grey-black ape-like body, but an extended muzzle and goat like horns. It may be related to the Krampus or Wampa. Known to raid farms for chicken, corn, and dairy products.

Best places to go Billiwhack hunting: The Billiwhack Dairy in Aliso Canyon, Santa Paula, farms and forests in the San Rafael mountains and Ojai.

Beasts 7 through 1 after the cut, including a real live Sea Serpent

Recommending a Good Bank [05 Jul 2008|10:16am]

vancouver

[rosetopography]
I'm planning on starting at UBC in January 2009 and was wondering if anyone had experience with setting up a bank account in Canada. On CIC's Web site they give a listing of various banks, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one for a student at UBC living on, or hopefully, near campus. Vancity seems to be a pretty good one based on their Web site. Anyone know if there's a bank on-campus?

Also, does anyone know if I could get a Canadian VISA (credit card)? I've heard that my credit score in the US does not transfer into other countries (not that it's terrible or anything), but I'm thinking that if I'm going to spend a few years in BC, and will probably charging a few things, I'd rather set up a local account versus get hit again and again with international fees.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks!

Where are some places were someone can buy real (not fake) Birkenstocks in this city? Bonus points if you know of somewhere that sells them cheap.

Thank you!

I actually wrote down the pattern this time.  I can't belive I managed to  write my own pattern.  This probably sounds lame, but I have always wanted a nice big collection of pattern that I could sell or maybe even put in my own crochet book.  I guess I can say I have one down :)

Fun on Wednesdays and Thursdays [05 Jul 2008|03:42pm]

vancouver

[de_grasshopper]
Hello Vancouver!!
So my current (crappy) job gives me Thursdays and Fridays off and every once in a while I feel like getting shit-canned in order to deal with my failures in life.  So, I ask you:  Where are some fun places to go on Wednesdays and Thursday nights?

I have heard there is some karaoke at the Legion on Main Street on Wednesdays and something about the Cellar on Thursdays??  but otherwise I'm at a loss.

I'm looking for laid back places to get drinks and dance.  I'm into more old rock, metal, punk, and some top 40 but definitely not into electro-house kind of stuff.

Oh, and preferably downtownish...

mexican restaurants [04 Jul 2008|08:09am]

vancouver

[pi_hole]
where is good mexican food to be had?

as per usual, i have specific criteria (aside from delicious comestibles):

- somewhere in burnaby would be ideal, but vancouver proper is fine as well
- a dine-in place, as opposed to take-out
- getting a table there on a friday evening isn't impossible (and if they get busy, then they take reservations)
- must have a good selection of both veggie and meatatarian dishes
- they don't skimp on the booze in their margaritas
- bonus points if they put cilantro in their (freshly-made) salsa
